Former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), has been endorsed by northern leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as their consensus candidate for the party’s National Chairmanship position ahead of the November convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The announcement was made late Wednesday in Abuja by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, after a meeting of northern PDP stakeholders. Fintiri said the decision to adopt Turaki followed extensive consultations among party leaders in the region.

He, however, clarified that the consensus choice does not prevent any aspirant from contesting at the convention, stating that “anyone who feels otherwise is free to test their popularity at the polls.”

The development comes after weeks of intense lobbying and deliberations among prominent northern PDP figures. Earlier reports by The PUNCH indicated that former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi, ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, and Turaki had been in a tight race for the chairmanship position.

With this endorsement, Turaki now stands as the North’s preferred candidate going into the national convention, which is expected to shape the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
