The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is not life-threatening.
Following a directive from Justice James Omotosho about two weeks ago, the NMA conducted an independent medical evaluation after conflicting reports were presented by both the defence and prosecution teams.
In a report submitted on October 13 by the prosecution, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the NMA confirmed that Kanu is medically fit to stand trial. This finding was partially read out in open court during Thursday’s proceedings.
With no objection from either legal team, Justice Omotosho ruled that the court was satisfied with the assessment and approved the continuation of the trial.
The judge granted Kanu six consecutive days, starting October 23, to present and conclude his defence.
Additionally, the court approved a request by Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), for a private consultation with his client.
The defence had raised concerns that their discussions may be monitored by the Department of State Services (DSS). The court ordered that this private meeting be held in the courtroom on October 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, with only Kanu and his lawyers present.
