Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured workers at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, that his administration remains committed to their welfare and to addressing the challenges facing the institution.
Makinde gave the assurance on Tuesday during a meeting with professional bodies at the hospital amid the ongoing industrial action by nurses and midwives. His visit was part of efforts to resolve the strike and restore normalcy.
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the governor promised immediate interventions to ease the workers’ grievances.
Key Interventions Announced Includes:
Constitution of a Governing Council for LAUTECH Teaching Hospital before the end of the week.
Monthly stipend of N80,000 for 65 non-staff security personnel, with their absorption as ad hoc staff.
Increase of N35m in the hospital’s monthly subvention to tackle operational challenges.
Payment of N219m accumulated promotion arrears in three instalments (October–December 2025).
Settlement of minimum wage arrears (January–August 2025), also payable in three tranches between October and December.
Makinde explained that issues such as the review of salary structures would be addressed by the newly constituted Governing Council. He also promised that the concerns of nursing students would not be overlooked.
“There are major recurring issues, especially the Governing Council for LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. I assure you that before the end of this week, the Council will be in place. They will have clear mandates and timelines to resolve these matters,” Makinde said.
While emphasizing his commitment to workers’ welfare, the governor urged unions to appreciate the need for government to balance resources between welfare and infrastructure development to guarantee a livable state for present and future generations.
The Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, while speaking earlier said Makinde’s intervention underscored his dedication to quality healthcare in the state.
Acting Chief Medical Director, Prof. Olawale Olakulehin, praised the governor for increasing the hospital’s subvention, describing him as “a listening leader and an embodiment of compassion.”
Union representatives and students, including the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU), Nurses and Midwives and Nursing and Medical Students, commended Makinde for his responsiveness but appealed for more improvements in welfare and infrastructure.
Later, Makinde paid a courtesy visit to the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, where he announced plans for the reconstruction of inner roads in the town. Two contractors have already been engaged to ensure speedy execution of the projects.
Oba Olaoye applauded Makinde’s leadership style, describing him as a governor with “many landmarks,” citing his intervention in the LAUTECH crisis and his role in approving the monarch’s appointment.
