The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped death on Monday night after being ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Corps spokesperson, Abass Yusuf, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Osogbo.

According to Yusuf, the attack occurred around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel, Osogbo.

He explained that the commander was driving home alone after official duties when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, leaving it riddled with bullets.

“It is deeply troubling that Amotekun commander could be targeted in such a coordinated and vicious manner,” Yusuf said.

He added that apart from the ambush, 15 unidentified masked armed men reportedly stormed Omoyele’s private residence the same night.

“Apart from the attack same yesterday, 15 unidentified armed men masked, reportedly stormed Omoyele’s private residence and witnesses claimed the attackers arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV,” he disclosed.

Yusuf noted that the attack on the top-ranking security official raises serious concerns about rising insecurity even among those charged with protecting citizens.

“The corps urged citizens to remain calm and also report any suspicious activities to local security agencies for prompt responses and actions. The attack is not just an attack on one man but on the symbol of localised security structure,” he added.

He further stated that the commander sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under protective watch.

Yusuf said the case had been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and investigation was ongoing.

The incident comes days after Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered a full investigation into the killing of some residents of Akinlalu Community by Amotekun operatives and dispatched a top-level delegation to the area to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the killings.
