Traditional rulers in Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State have issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, demanding that he provide evidence to back his recent allegation against the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Oluwo alleged that the Ooni had conspired with his former wife, Queen Chanel, to assassinate him. He further declared that his conflict with the revered monarch would not end.
Reacting under the banner of “Origbo Meje Obas”, the monarchs condemned Oluwo’s conduct, describing it as unbecoming of a traditional ruler.
Speaking on their behalf, the Salu of Edunabon, Oba Adesoji Kehinde, at his palace on Thursday, accused the Oluwo of misbehavior, insults and showing gross disrespect to the sacred throne of Oduduwa.
The monarchs said the Oluwo’s repeated outbursts were attempts to ridicule the Yoruba traditional leadership structure, warning that such acts would no longer be tolerated.
“There is no controversy about the supremacy of the Ooni’s throne as the Head of all Obas in Yorubaland. Historical records confirm this. It is, therefore, surprising that the Oluwo continues to demean the institution with baseless claims,” Oba Kehinde stated.
He further criticized Oluwo’s frequent changes of title, from “Emir of Iwo” to “Alaafin of Iwo”, describing it as a ploy for media attention that brings disrepute to Yoruba royal institutions.
The monarchs then handed down a 21-day ultimatum, warning that failure by the Oluwo to substantiate his assassination claims against the Ooni would compel them to seek legal redress.
