The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended a 33-year-old man, Lawan Isa, for allegedly possessing 56 counterfeit 100-dollar notes.
Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the suspect was nabbed on October 5 at Gidan Lage Market under the Ringim Division.
He said, “Acting on credible intelligence, on 5th October 2025, at about 1700hrs, operatives attached to Gidan Lage Outstation under Ringim Division arrested one Lawan Isa, male, aged 33, of Dorayi Karama, Kano State, at Gidan Lage Market, in possession of suspected counterfeit dollars.”
During the operation, the police also recovered four Android phones and a keypad handset from the suspect.
SP Adam explained that Isa could not offer a satisfactory explanation for being in possession of the fake currencies, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Dutse, for detailed investigation.
He further stated that the arrest was part of ongoing efforts by the Jigawa Police Command to sustain peace and curb criminal activities in the state.
Adam urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and to share useful information that could assist the police in ensuring safety across the state.
He assured that the Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and would continue to clamp down on criminal elements.
The circulation of fake dollar notes has become increasingly rampant across several northern states, including Jigawa.
Earlier this year, reports indicated that Jigawa police arrested 13 suspects in a joint operation with other security agencies, recovering several bundles of counterfeit 100-dollar bills and fake ₦1,000 notes.
Authorities warn that the illegal trade poses a serious threat to economic stability and has become a source of financial loss and insecurity for unsuspecting citizens.
