A police officer in Delta State has been detained after he was caught on video firing at the tyre of a moving vehicle near Toscana Hotel along Okpanam Road in Asaba.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, quickly went viral on social media, drawing public outrage. The video showed the officer discharging his weapon as the vehicle attempted to drive away.
The officer’s actions have been widely criticized as dangerous and in violation of police procedures regarding firearm use in public areas.
Reacting to the incident on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, condemned the officer’s conduct, describing it as “embarrassing, shameful, careless, unprofessional, and unjustified.”
“In all honesty, this is embarrassing, shameful, careless, so unprofessional and not justified at all,” Edafe wrote. “The policeman has been identified, detained, and will appear before the Commissioner of Police today.”
As of the time of this report, no injuries or fatalities have been confirmed.
