The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned individuals planning to stage demonstrations demanding the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to steer clear of Aso Rock and its surrounding areas.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, issued the warning in a statement released on Sunday in Abuja. He said the caution followed an order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which restrained any form of protest within and around the Presidential Villa.
According to Hundeyin, the court order, in the case Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others prohibits protests within Aso Rock Villa, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
“All intending protesters and counter-protest groups are strongly advised to avoid these restricted areas and desist from any act capable of provoking confrontation or disrupting public order,” Hundeyin stated.
He added that the police would ensure free movement of traffic, protection of lives and property, and the overall safety of law-abiding citizens during this period.
Hundeyin warned that anyone or group hiding under the guise of protest to incite violence, carry weapons, vandalize property, or engage in acts capable of causing injury or loss of life would face the full weight of the law.
He further explained that individuals using social media or other digital platforms to incite unrest would also be tracked, investigated, and prosecuted with the aid of digital evidence.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory and other relevant operational commands to strictly enforce the court order.
Hundeyin emphasized that security operatives had been deployed to strategic areas across the FCT to prevent any breakdown of law and order and ensure the safety of residents.
He urged protest organizers to adhere strictly to the court’s directive and to pursue their grievances through legal and peaceful means.
“The Force has made adequate security arrangements to safeguard the lives and property of all law-abiding Nigerians. Those not involved in any form of protest are encouraged to go about their lawful activities without fear,” he added.
