Atiku-and-Ladoja.-

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has explained that protocol arrangements were the reason for his absence at the coronation of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

Atiku made this known on Tuesday during a visit to the monarch’s private residence in Ibadan. He was accompanied by key figures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, including former PDP National Chairman, Iyorcha Ayu, and former Governors Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna) and Liyel Imoke (Cross River), among others.

Oba Ladoja was formally installed as the 44th Olubadan last Friday in a grand ceremony attended by President Bola Tinubu and several dignitaries.

Addressing the monarch, Atiku said “We are here to congratulate the new Olubadan, Oba Ladoja. We regret not attending the coronation—it was not intentional. Protocol arrangements did not permit our presence, not a lack of willingness.”

He added “We recognize your longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s political development and your relationships with many of us. Kindly accept our apologies.”

In response, Oba Ladoja emphasized that his new role as Olubadan requires him to step away from partisan politics and serve as a father to all.

“I am no longer one of you. I am now the Olubadan of Ibadanland and must be for everyone. I have left politics behind,” he declared.

Reflecting on his political journey, the monarch noted “We started from the SDP. We were in exile together. We joined the PDP, and later I founded Accord Party to establish a political identity. But that phase of my life is over.”

He stressed that his reign would be guided by the principles of justice and fairness, and called on his visitors for continued support and counsel.

“I will serve Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Africa, and the world. I welcome your advice and encouragement,” he said.
