The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worsened on Monday following the resignation of a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Sadiq Abdullahi.
Abdullahi, who represents Sabon Gari Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, attributed his exit to the party’s “loss of direction” and deepening internal wrangling, which he said had made it difficult for him to serve his constituents effectively.
His departure came shortly after former National Secretary S.K.E. Udeh Okoye also left the party, further signalling growing unrest and dissatisfaction among key figures within the PDP leadership.
Abdullahi, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), made his resignation known in a letter addressed to his ward chairman and released to journalists on Monday.
“The persistent internal conflicts and factionalisation within the PDP, which have culminated in a prolonged party crisis, are adversely affecting my ability to effectively represent my constituency and perform my duties optimally,” Abdullahi stated.
He said the decision came after wide-ranging consultations with political associates and community stakeholders and was driven by his commitment to provide “purposeful, inclusive, and effective representation” for the people of Sabon Gari Federal Constituency, beyond partisan lines.
“I wish to sincerely thank the PDP for the privilege and opportunity to serve under its platform. The support, trust, and experiences I have gained during my time with the party have been invaluable,” he added.
The back-to-back resignations of Udeh Okoye and Sadiq Abdullahi have further exposed simmering divisions within the PDP over its leadership, internal democracy, and strategic direction ahead of future elections.
