Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has named retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Wale Abbas, to head an investigation into the recent killings in Akinlalu, where operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps allegedly shot and killed three residents.
Abbas, who also serves as chairman of the Osun Amotekun Board, has been directed to lead a full inquiry into the role of the Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, in the incident.
The appointment was announced during Governor Adeleke’s condolence visit to the affected community, where he also assured families of the victims that justice would be served.
Addressing demands for Omoyele’s suspension, Adeleke stated that appropriate action was underway and confirmed that the injured victims are receiving medical care, with state support pledged for their treatment needs.
The governor commended the community’s youths for their restraint in the aftermath of the violence and urged continued calm as investigations progress. His remarks came in response to calls from local youth leader, Musbau Adeboye, for Omoyele to be suspended and investigated.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 30, when Amotekun personnel allegedly stormed Akinlalu and opened fire on residents, killing three and injuring several others.
The Osun State Police Command identified the deceased as Ibrahim Oyebamiji (26), Sefiu Oyebamiji, and Abiola Olutayo, with three others suffering gunshot wounds.
According to police, Amotekun operatives removed the bodies from the scene before officers arrived. While the corps acknowledged the deaths, it claimed its operatives acted in self-defence during a confrontation with suspected hoodlums attempting to seize their weapons.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has since deployed a special investigative team to the state.
Five Amotekun operatives have been arrested, though Commander Omoyele has reportedly failed to respond to multiple police summons.
