Nigerian Afrobeat sensation, Charles Chukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has announced the passing of his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Chukwu.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday evening, the Mavin Records artist revealed that she passed away on July 4.

Crayon described his mother as his “rock, backbone, and angel,” expressing the deep pain he feels over her death. He referred to the day she died as the “darkest” of his life.

Recalling their final conversation, Crayon said it happened just days before her passing. As was her tradition, she had called to pray for him at the beginning of the new month.

“I didn’t know that would be your last prayer. You sounded so healthy, like nothing was wrong. Then my whole world crumbled right in front of me,” he wrote.

He shared the heartbreaking moment he saw her lifeless on a hospital bed something he described as his “greatest fear” and a memory that shattered him.

The singer also opened up about the cruel timing of her death just days before his birthday and at a time when the family’s financial struggles had finally begun to ease.

“After all the suffer wey we don suffer for decades, na now wey God don bless us, you come die leave me? Wetin come be the need?” he wrote, switching between English and Pidgin.

Crayon paid tribute to his mother as a “warrior” who carried the family through years of hardship. Despite his sorrow, he promised to remain strong, support his family, and keep moving forward as she would have wished.

“I will never say goodbye because I know you are living through me and are always with me. Thank you for everything, my beautiful mummy. Till we meet again, my angel.”

He confirmed that Mrs. Evelyn Chukwu has since been laid to rest.
