Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called on Nigerians to join a nationwide protest demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is scheduled for October 20 in Abuja, despite a court order restricting demonstrations near key government institutions.

In posts on X and Facebook, Sowore urged supporters to take peaceful action, saying, “Carry a sign, sing a song, make a statement!” and called for one million people to flood the streets of Abuja. Protesters are expected to gather at 7 a.m. outside the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

The protest coincides with the fifth anniversary of the #EndSARS movement, a moment Sowore has described as symbolic for continuing the fight for justice and civil rights.

A Federal High Court injunction had barred protests in sensitive areas like the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, and Force Headquarters. Sowore questioned the legitimacy of the court order and accused authorities of applying double standards, citing recent protests opposing Kanu’s release that faced no such restrictions.

Vowing to challenge the injunction in court, Sowore confirmed that a team of 115 lawyers was prepared to take legal action.

He emphasized the protest would go ahead lawfully and peacefully, declaring, “October 20 #FreeNnamdiKanuNow remains sacrosanct.”
