Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, has made history as the first Nigerian female artist to sell over 10 million units of a single in the United States.
The milestone was confirmed on September 30, 2025, by Chart Data via X (formerly Twitter), announcing that “WAIT FOR U” Tems’ collaboration with American rappers Future and Drake has officially surpassed the 10 million sales mark in the US.
The track previously earned Tems a Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance, further establishing her growing influence on the global music stage.
In addition to this feat, Tems has also become the first African female artist to reach one billion streams on Spotify, another major achievement in her international career.
Tems rose to prominence in 2020 following her feature on Wizkid’s global hit “Essence,” which broke into the Billboard Hot 100 and received multiple Grammy nominations. Her journey began in 2018 with her debut single, “Mr Rebel.”
Currently on her 2025–2026 world tour, Tems has been performing across major cities, including Nairobi, Salvador (Brazil), and Los Angeles, where she is scheduled to perform at Dodger Stadium. The tour began on September 28 and runs through November 15.
After a recent performance in Kenya, Tems expressed gratitude in a post on X “Kenya! The love has been insane! I love you so much. Till next time.”
While Tems is the first Nigerian woman to achieve this sales record, Wizkid was the first Nigerian male artist to reach the milestone. His feature on Drake’s 2016 hit “One Dance” was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2022.
Tems’ latest achievement solidifies her role as a trailblazer for African female artists in the global music industry. She has also received numerous accolades, including BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and a Soul Train Music Award.
