Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has described soldiering as a profession that requires “a touch of madness.”
Speaking during his screening before the Senate on Wednesday, Oluyede explained that the military demands a level of courage and sacrifice that goes beyond normal human instincts.
He said, “There’s something special about being a soldier. For a right-thinking person, when there is danger, you expect to retreat. But as a soldier, you’re expected to move forward and face the challenge. That’s why I say there’s an element of madness in being a soldier.”
The CDS highlighted the enormous pressure and selflessness that come with the job, noting that service chiefs rarely have personal time or rest. “You must give yourself completely, no sleep, no comfort just the drive to make Nigeria safer,” he added.
Lieutenant General Oluyede was recently appointed by President Bola Tinubu to replace General Christopher Musa, who was relieved of his duties last week.
