President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the Senate, seeking the confirmation of the newly appointed service chiefs who are expected to lead Nigeria’s military in tackling the country’s growing security challenges.
The letter, read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, listed the nominees as follows: General Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke – Chief of Air Staff and Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye – Chief of Defence Intelligence
In the letter, President Tinubu urged the Senate to fast-track the confirmation process so that the officers can quickly assume full command of their respective services. He said their appointments were based on their track records of professionalism, leadership, and commitment to national service.
Senate President Akpabio, after reading the letter, referred the nominations to the Committee of the Whole for screening, which is scheduled to take place next week.
The upcoming screening is expected to be thorough, as senators will likely grill the nominees on their plans to address persistent national security threats such as terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and separatist violence.
This move reflects President Tinubu’s continued push to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and enhance coordination among the armed forces.
If confirmed, the new service chiefs will play a critical role in advancing the administration’s vision for a safer and more stable nation.
