Liverpool finally snapped their four-game losing streak with an emphatic 5–1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in their UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night. Former Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike found the net against his old team, setting the tone for a dominant performance from the Reds.
After going behind early to a Rasmus Kristensen goal, Liverpool quickly roared back into form. Goals from Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed a much-needed win, with Florian Wirtz providing two assists on his return to Germany.
The match came at a crucial time for Liverpool, who were on the brink of their worst losing run in over 70 years, a slump last seen in the 1953–54 season when they were relegated.
Manager Arne Slot made the bold decision to drop an out-of-form Mohamed Salah, a move that appeared to pay off as his side responded with energy and precision.
Despite conceding first for the fifth consecutive game, Liverpool found their rhythm midway through the first half. Ekitike equalised with a cool finish past goalkeeper Michael Zetterer, choosing not to celebrate out of respect for his former club. Moments later, Van Dijk and Konaté both scored headers from corners in quick succession to hand Liverpool a 3–1 lead before halftime.
In the second half, Wirtz — who had been under pressure for a lack of goal contributions since his move to Anfield provided two assists, first for Gakpo and then for Szoboszlai, as Liverpool ran riot in Frankfurt.
The victory will serve as a major boost for Arne Slot’s side, though tougher tests lie ahead. Frankfurt, meanwhile, continue to struggle defensively, having now conceded 23 goals in their last six matches.
