Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has endorsed Omoyele Sowore’s campaign demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a letter dated October 13 and shared by Sowore on social media, Wabara—currently abroad for medical treatment—praised the effort and pledged his full support, stating that although he cannot be present in person, he stands in solidarity with those advocating for justice.
Wabara, who also chairs the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), commended the courage behind the upcoming October 20 protest and emphasized the importance of peaceful advocacy in the pursuit of national reconciliation.
Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has been reaching out to prominent leaders from Nigeria’s South-East region, calling on governors, lawmakers, and traditional authorities to join the push for Kanu’s freedom.
He revealed that while some have responded positively, others have yet to engage. Sowore urged immediate action, stressing that hesitation only prolongs injustice.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 following a controversial extradition from Kenya.
Despite several court rulings in his favor—including a 2022 Court of Appeal judgment declaring his extradition illegal and ordering his release—the federal government has refused to comply. Kanu continues to face terrorism and treason-related charges, all of which he denies.
