The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has successfully conducted a pilot test on computer-based essay writing as part of its preparation for the full rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE for School Candidates starting in 2026.

The trial exercise, supervised by WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, was held on Thursday at the council’s Training and Testing Centre in Ogba, Lagos. Senior secondary school students took part in the exercise designed to help them get familiar with the new exam format that will combine both objective and essay questions on the computer.

Dr. Dangut explained that the initiative was aimed at preparing students for full participation in digital examinations while helping schools across the country close existing technology gaps.

He recalled that in September, the council reaffirmed its commitment to migrate the WASSCE entirely to a computer-based format by 2026, a process that began with private candidates in 2024 and has already recorded “significant progress.”

Addressing the students, Dangut described them as pioneers in history, the first group to attempt a full computer-based test that integrates both objective and essay components.

He further noted that while some schools would take both sections of the exam online, others in areas with limited access to computers would continue to write the essay portion manually.

“Our goal is to ensure inclusivity that every student, regardless of where they live, can take the exam conveniently,” he said.

Dangut assured that the transition to a digital system would enhance efficiency, accessibility, and fairness in the examination process, while maintaining the integrity and credibility WAEC is known for.

He encouraged students to embrace digital learning, describing technology-driven assessments as the future of education and a vital tool for global competitiveness.
