Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has disclosed that he turned down a political appointment offered by President Bola Tinubu, citing a desire to focus on his personal life after decades in public service.

Fayose made this known during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

Although a long-time friend of President Tinubu, Fayose who remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made it clear that he had no interest in serving under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

“Have you seen me take an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir,’” Fayose revealed.

“At 65, I’d rather stay at home, live responsibly, and focus on other aspects of life. I’ve served well—two-time governor—I’ve done my part. Tomorrow will take care of itself.”

He emphasized that while his friendship with Tinubu remains intact, it does not equate to political alignment or endorsement of the APC.

“I’ve never been with the APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That’s the truth,” Fayose said.

On the 2027 general elections, Fayose stated that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, is currently the only opposition figure with significant national traction.

“Tell me, who else can challenge the APC? The only person with real momentum is Obi.

“He’s not in government, yet he’s the one consistently speaking up and making an impact. I give that to him.”

When asked whether Obi is a more formidable opposition figure than former President Goodluck Jonathan or Rotimi Amaechi, Fayose declined to make a direct comparison.

He concluded by saying that his political decisions are based on principle rather than personal benefit and that he would continue to speak out when necessary.
