The World Institute for Peace (WIP) has called on local government chairmen across Osun State to take decisive and impartial steps in resolving the lingering traditional rulership disputes in their respective domains. The institute emphasized that justice and fairness must prevail, especially in cases where courts have already delivered clear verdicts.
In a statement issued by the organization, WIP reminded the council chairmen that, according to the Nigerian Constitution and the Local Government Autonomy framework, traditional rulers operate directly under the supervision of local governments. The group stressed that this structure gives the councils a constitutional duty to ensure fairness, peace, and lawful governance at the grassroots level.
The group specifically urged the chairmen to carefully review the circumstances surrounding the removal and suspension of some traditional rulers in the state. “It is imperative that appropriate actions be taken to address the concerns raised,” the institute stated. Also adding that several traditional rulers affected by the governor’s executive orders have already won their cases in court.
The group noted that both the Aare of Iree and the Owa of Igbajo have triumphed in their legal battles against the state government. The judgment in the Owa of Igbajo’s case clearly affirmed that no governor possesses the authority to issue executive orders that override the position of traditional rulers recognized by law, WIP affirm.
The institute clarified that there was no ongoing court case against His Royal Highness, Oba Akadiri also explaining that the dispute was rather among royal families over the rightful succession to the throne. WIP revealed that Oba Akadiri and his family have won three consecutive court cases, which further strengthens their legitimate claim.
According to the group on the issue of the Aare of ire , despite the court injunction preventing the installation of another ruler, the government is yet to restore the Staff of Office to the rightful king. “It is worrisome that the judgment has not been implemented, while describing the act as a clear disregard for judicial authority”, WIP lamented.
The group also appealed to the council chairmen to look into the issue of unpaid salary arrears owed to traditional rulers across Osun State. It described the situation as unjust and demoralizing, noting that such neglect undermines the respect and dignity of the royal institution.
The group implore the local government chairmen to make the welfare and security of traditional rulers a top priority. The group further emphasized that providing allowances, ensuring security, and supporting community development are among the primary responsibilities of local councils.
WIP concluded by urging all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law and restore integrity to the traditional institution and restore stability in the state.
