A 48-year-old woman in Georgia, Stacy Wheeler Cobb, has been arrested after two Rottweilers fatally attacked a two-year-old boy, Kaimir Jones, who was in her care while she reportedly slept for hours.
According to the Valdosta Police Department, the child’s body was discovered in the backyard of Cobb’s home around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. The department confirmed the details in a press release on Monday.
Investigations revealed that Kaimir wandered out of the house and managed to unlock the kennel where the dogs were kept while Cobb was taking a long nap.
Police said Kaimir’s mother had left him in Cobb’s care, and he was the only child present at the time of the incident. However, investigators later discovered that Cobb often watched up to 10 children at once, despite reportedly operating an unlicensed daycare.
Cobb told officers she had “thought the child was well” as she napped for more than two hours.
Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan described the incident as a tragedy that could have been avoided.
“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred, but because of negligence on this offender’s behalf, a mother has tragically lost a child,” Manahan said.
“No words will ever ease their pain, but our hearts go out to them during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Cobb has since been charged with second-degree murder and cruelty to children. The two Rottweilers involved in the attack, along with a third dog, have been handed over to Lowndes County Animal Control.
The victim’s mother, Adrianna Jones, revealed on GoFundMe that her instincts led her to leave work early to check on her son after hours without hearing from Cobb.
“This was a heartbreaking, devastating, and traumatising scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I found my baby like this,” she wrote, adding that Cobb had been “highly recommended.”
The tragedy echoes a similar dog attack in Lagos, Nigeria, in November 2024, when three Boerboel dogs reportedly mauled a security guard to death at Pinnock Estate, Lekki. The estate’s dog owner was later arrested by the police after a viral video of the incident sparked public outrage.
