A disagreement over a romantic relationship has ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old man, Jibrin Lamido, was hacked to death during a violent altercation with a rival suitor in Gurdadi village, Yusufari Local Government Area of Yobe State.

According to information obtained from the state police spokesperson, Dungus Abdulkareem, the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday.

Speaking with our correspondent on Wednesday, Abdulkareem said, “The incident happened around 2 am on Monday. Jibrin Lamido and the suspect were fighting over a lady, and he was hacked with a cutlass and died afterwards. The suspect and the lady are currently on the run, and the police are still on their trail. I just finished speaking with the DPO in the area in order to get an update on the incident,” he said.

A counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, also gave an update on the case in a post on X, stating that the trouble began when the deceased visited the residence of his girlfriend, Saratu Gata, in Kalameri village.

Citing an eyewitness account, Makama noted that Jibrin was with the lady when the suspect arrived, took her away, and taunted Jibrin to follow them “if he was truly a man.”

The situation reportedly escalated into a physical fight, during which the suspect attacked Jibrin with a cutlass, leaving him with deep injuries on his neck.

“An unknown man was said to have arrived at the scene, took the lady away, and challenged the deceased to follow them if he was ‘truly a man.’

“A fight subsequently broke out between both men, during which the suspect allegedly attacked Jibrin with a cutlass, inflicting severe injuries on his neck. Security operatives from Kumaganam Outstation rushed the victim to the General Hospital, Kumaganam, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”

Makama added that the body was released to the family for burial after an autopsy was conducted.

A similar case was earlier reported on October 23, when a 25-year-old man, Hammed Tunde, was allegedly stabbed to death by his friend, identified only as Gafar, during a heated argument said to have been over a woman in the Oja Gboro area of Ilorin, Kwara State.

Such incidents have continued to spark public debate on the importance of emotional restraint and peaceful conflict resolution, especially among young people.
