Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has urged the Chinese Government to back Nigeria’s quest for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, describing it as a move that would promote global solidarity and shared prosperity.

Speaking during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the China International Import Expo 2025, Abbas emphasized Nigeria’s vital role in African and global affairs, noting that such recognition would benefit both nations and the international community.

Abbas highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing legislative reforms aimed at strengthening public finance laws, improving trade and tax codes, and fostering innovation-friendly policies to make the nation a stable and attractive investment destination.

He proposed the establishment of a Nigeria–China Legislative Cooperation Framework to institutionalize dialogue between both countries’ parliaments on governance, transparency, and innovation.

The Speaker identified key areas for collaboration, including technological sovereignty, green industrialization, and human capital development.

He cited Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy projects like the Zungeru Hydropower Project and urged expanded cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital trade, cybersecurity, and sustainable development.

Abbas also revealed that negotiations are nearing completion between Nigeria and a major Chinese state-owned enterprise for the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, a move he said would mark the largest Nigeria–China collaboration to date.

In response, Premier Li Qiang praised the robust relationship between both countries, describing it as being on a “fast track” of development.

He reaffirmed China’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with Nigeria through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, trade and investment expansion, and the implementation of zero-tariff measures.

Li pledged China’s support for Nigeria’s increased role in global and regional affairs through platforms like the United Nations, BRICS, and the World Trade Organisation.

Nigeria’s campaign for a permanent Security Council seat builds on its decades-long leadership in peacekeeping, diplomacy, and advocacy for UN reform.

As Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, Nigeria argues that its inclusion would provide the continent with a stronger, more representative voice in international decision-making.
