The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad, has pledged to end what he described as “impunity, manipulation, and disregard” for the party’s constitution.
Speaking on Friday during the inauguration of the party’s new Board of Trustees (BoT) at the Abuja residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Muhammad called the occasion “a symbol of rebirth” and the start of a new era of transparency and accountability within the PDP.
Muhammad, who previously served as the National Vice Chairman (North Central), assumed office following the suspension of Ambassador Umar Damagum by a faction of the party led by its National Secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu. The faction named Muhammad as Acting Chairman in Damagum’s place.
In his address, Muhammad said the PDP had “lost its moral balance” after years of internal disunity and disregard for court rulings.
“For too long, impunity became culture, and internal democracy became an afterthought. But today, we have reached the point of renewal,” he said.
He urged members to embrace unity and introspection, adding that the party’s decline began when it abandoned its zoning principles ahead of the 2015 general elections.
“Today marks a significant turning point in the life of the PDP. We are not just inaugurating a new Board of Trustees; we are renewing our faith in the ideals that built this great political family—justice, fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the rule of law,” Muhammad stated.
“To the new BoT members, this is not a reward for loyalty but a sacred trust. You must speak truth to power, defend justice, and ensure the PDP remains a home for all Nigerians.”
Following the ceremony, Muhammad held a closed-door meeting with other key party figures, including former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, PDP National Secretary Senator Sam Anyanwu, and former Senator representing Abia North, Mao Ohuabunwa.
