The death of the Owa of Igbajo and former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun III, has continued to provoke an outpouring of grief across the state, with Governor Ademola Adeleke and prominent APC leaders describing his passing as a monumental loss.
Governor Adeleke, in a statement issued shortly after arriving in Nigeria on Sunday, said he received the news with deep shock. He described the late monarch as a long-standing associate of the Adeleke family dating back to their years in the United States, praising him as a “politician of note” who made significant contributions to Osun’s political landscape.
“On behalf of the government and people of Osun State, I condole with the family of our late brother, Adegboyega Famodun,” Adeleke said. “His death came as a shock. He was a close family friend, and we mourn his sudden passing. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Adeleke also extended his condolences to the APC family and residents of Igbajo, urging prayers for the repose of the monarch’s soul.
Similarly, APC chieftain and governorship aspirant, Omooba Dotun Babayemi, described Oba Famodun’s death as “shocking, sad, and a great loss” to Igbajo, the APC, and Osun State.
Babayemi highlighted the monarch’s contributions as both a traditional ruler and a political leader, noting that his impact on governance and community development remains timeless.
“He played his part well and contributed immensely to the development of Osun. His contributions to the traditional institution and the polity are too significant to be forgotten,” he said. He prayed for comfort for the deceased’s family, friends, and the Igbajo community.
Another leading APC governorship hopeful in the state, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), also expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s passing, describing him as “an epitome of royalty, discipline, character, integrity, and service.”
In a personally signed statement, Oyebamiji ordered the immediate suspension of all AMBO Movement activities in honour of the late monarch. He extended condolences to the Famodun family, the Igbajo royal lineage, the Osun Council of Obas, and APC members across the country.
He also thanked President Bola Tinubu, former Osun Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, Chief Bisi Akande, Prof. Olu Aina, Prof. Isaac Adewale and others who made efforts to support the monarch during his final moments.
Oyebamiji described the late Oba’s reign as impactful, adding that his achievements both as a traditional ruler and former APC state chairman would remain indelible.
“Kabiyesi will be remembered for his peaceful nature, exceptional wisdom and tireless efforts in promoting community development,” he said. “I pray God grants his family the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.”
Oba Famodun, a former State Chairman of the APC and former Secretary of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), reportedly passed away on Friday after a brief illness. His family, the Gbeleru Royal House of Igbajo, formally announced his death on Sunday.
