Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has positioned the state as a national reference point for subnational climate action, using the platform of the recently concluded COP30 in São Paulo, Brazil, to highlight its strides in renewable energy, e-mobility, and circular economy innovation.
Speaking on behalf of the governor at the global summit, the Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, described Osun’s climate policies as “groundbreaking and far reaching,” noting that the administration remains committed to full implementation.
Prof. Obuaku-Igwe, who presented Osun’s climate vision during a well attended side event titled “From Waste to Wheels and Watts: Subnational Innovation in Recycling, E-Mobility & Solar,” said the state’s approach reflects deliberate planning, strong governance, and a drive for measurable outcomes rather than ceremonial participation.
She identified three pillars of Osun’s climate strategy: strengthening international partnerships, unlocking climate finance and Article 6 opportunities, and scaling homegrown innovation. According to her, Osun has already recorded progress in solar deployment, recycling ecosystems, and the development of a Green Livelihoods workforce.
Highlighting the administration’s people centered approach, she noted that Osun has built a governance framework that encourages collective problem solving and community driven implementation.
“Climate leadership must translate into jobs, improved systems, stronger institutions, and resilience for the people we serve, Osun State is not here to simply attend COP30. We are here to deliver outcomes that follow us back home,” she said.
A documentary showcasing real life stories of transformation through recycling, solar energy, and e-mobility was also screened, underscoring Osun’s position as a model for practical and scalable climate initiatives in Nigeria.
Governor Adeleke has received several local and international recognitions for the climate focused programmes and interventions championed through the Office of the Special Envoy, further cementing Osun’s reputation as a leading state in environmental innovation.
The statement was signed by Mallam Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to the governor.
