Governors from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered in Yola, Adamawa State, on Saturday for the official unveiling of the new Margi national attire.
The Margi people Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s ethnic group are predominantly found in Borno State and parts of Cameroon.
Speaking at the event, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, praised Fintiri as “a bridge builder across the River Niger,” stressing that cultural identity is essential to the survival of any ethnic group. He emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive through unity that cuts across religion and ethnicity.
“Unity brings peace, and peace brings development. As politicians, we must foster peace by doing what is right and lawful,” he said, urging leaders to prioritize citizens’ welfare since “democracy cannot flourish without the people.”
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also commended Fintiri’s leadership, describing his projects as people-focused.
He encouraged residents of Adamawa to support the governor regardless of political affiliation, expressing optimism that Nigeria’s democracy would grow with the right leaders in office.
Representing Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Deputy Governor Umar Kadafur highlighted the need for unity and peace to enable development and job creation across the country.
He called on Nigerians to stand together against external threats and urged Fintiri to maintain his inclusive leadership style.
In his remarks, Governor Fintiri noted that “a people without memory are a people without meaning.”
He said the gathering was an opportunity to honour shared heritage and reinforce the unity that has sustained the Margi people through generations.
“The Margi people have endured not because of our number but because of our unity. Our faith is strong, our dignity firm, and our hearts committed to peace,” he said.
Fintiri added that true peace must go hand-in-hand with opportunity.
The new national attire, he explained, is simple yet symbolic, a reminder that culture is strength, not weakness.
Dignitaries at the ceremony included Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, PDP National Chairman Saminu Turaki, and several top party officials.
