Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has called on policymakers and human resource professionals to ensure that technology and data are used to empower, not control, people.

He emphasized the importance of ethical responsibility as the world of work continues to evolve through rapid digital transformation.

Osinbajo made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the 57th International Conference and Exhibition of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) in Abuja. His statement was issued on Saturday and signed by Ahmed Gobir, President and Chairman of CIPM’s Governing Council.

“Data should serve as a tool of empowerment, not control,” Osinbajo said.

“Artificial intelligence has changed everything. The future of work is already here, shaped by technology and our youthful population. We must continue to reskill and upskill to seize the opportunities ahead.”

The former vice president praised CIPM for its role in regulating people management practices in Nigeria and for promoting a balance between innovation and ethics in the workplace.

His comments come amid global discussions on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven decision-making.

Experts have warned that while digital tools can improve efficiency, they may also lead to job losses, privacy violations, and excessive workplace surveillance if not properly managed.

Osinbajo urged HR leaders to develop clear ethical guidelines for the use of AI and data, and to advocate for updated labour laws that reflect modern realities.

“The ethical and responsible use of technology is critical. HR must lead by establishing guidelines to regulate AI,” he said.

He further encouraged employers to prioritize mental health, empathy, and inclusion as key drivers of productivity.

“The future of work will not be determined by technology alone, but by how we integrate human values into its use. People—not technology will define the new world of work. Nigeria’s future will be written by those empowered to use innovation with wisdom, empathy, and vision.”

CIPM President Ahmed Gobir urged conference participants to apply lessons learned to improve workplace practices, noting that the event’s theme, “Reimagining the New World of Work,” highlights the need for agility and forward thinking in a rapidly changing environment.

Founded in 1968, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria is the country’s foremost professional body for HR management.

It plays a central role in promoting best practices, developing HR standards, and driving policy advocacy to enhance national productivity.

The annual CIPM conference remains the largest HR gathering in West Africa, bringing together public- and private-sector professionals to explore workplace trends, leadership, and workforce development in a technology-driven era.
