Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has hailed Chief Olabode George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, as a pivotal figure in Nigerian politics and a major influence in his own political journey.
Makinde made the remarks on Friday during Chief George’s 80th birthday celebration in Lagos, as conveyed in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju.
Reflecting on his path to the governorship, Makinde recalled how George supported him in 2014 by helping secure a military facility for the public declaration of his ambition to become governor, despite efforts by some federal actors to frustrate the event.
“He stood by me when I needed support the most. A lot of people know that Baba was in the military, and rising to the rank of General teaches you never to be a pushover. In 2014, when I wanted to declare my intention to contest for the governorship on the PDP platform at the Polo Ground in Ibadan, some within the party tried to stop it. They pressured the military to withdraw approval for the venue,” Makinde said.
He continued: “I turned to Baba George, and he intervened. By the eve of my declaration, the approval was restored, and the journey officially began. Today, I stand as Governor of Oyo State thanks to his support. Baba, I publicly thank you for being a part of my political journey.”
Makinde also praised George for his resilience and contributions to Nigeria, noting that his life exemplifies perseverance through trials and tribulations. “Life may not be smooth, but as Baba’s story shows, God ensures safe arrival at our destination,” he added.
The celebration was attended by prominent figures, including Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, traditional rulers like the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other dignitaries and captains of industry.
