Delegates at the 2025 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Elective National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, have unanimously ratified Umaru Damagum as the party’s substantive National Chairman.
The confirmation took place on Saturday at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, where over 3,000 delegates gathered for the convention.
Tony Abineri, Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, moved the motion for Damagum’s ratification on behalf of the delegates, citing Section 32 of the amended PDP Constitution. Edward Marshal seconded the motion.
Abineri said, “I hereby move the motion for the ratification of Umaru Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the party. This is in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution as amended.”
The convention, holding between November 15 and 16, is expected to conduct voting to formally elect a new national chairman, although early developments suggest there may be little opposition.
In a related development, former Sokoto State Governor, Kabiru Turaki, is reportedly on track to return as National Chairman, as he is currently the sole candidate for the position. Sources at the venue say delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to unanimously endorse him.
However, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, commended the resilience and dedication of PDP members nationwide.
He noted: “It’s been a long and challenging journey to get here. The 2025 PDP Elective Convention will remain a historic moment, not just for our members but for the entire nation.”
