Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that the end of his illustrious career is near, saying he plans to retire “soon.” The Portuguese icon, currently playing for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr, made the emotional revelation during a candid interview with British journalist Piers Morgan.
Now 40, Ronaldo has scored an astonishing 952 career goals, cementing his status as one of football’s greatest-ever players. Yet, even for someone so accustomed to breaking records and defying age, saying goodbye to the game won’t be easy.
“It will be tough, of course. Probably I will cry,” Ronaldo confessed. “But I’ve been preparing for this moment since I was 25 or 26. I think I’ll be capable of handling it.”
Despite being contracted to Al Nassr until 2027, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner acknowledged that he is already thinking beyond football. He revealed that he is eager to dedicate more time to his family and explore life beyond the pitch.
“Nothing compares to the adrenaline of football — to scoring a goal,” he said. “But everything has a beginning and an end. I have other passions. I want more time for myself and my family. I want to be there for Cristiano Junior — he’s at that age where kids do silly things. Mateo also loves football.”
The Portuguese captain also shared that he’s found joy in new hobbies, like playing Padel tennis with friends. “We’re getting quite good,” he said with a smile.
Ronaldo’s career began at Sporting Lisbon before his legendary rise with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus. His trophy cabinet includes multiple league titles, five Champions League crowns, and numerous individual accolades.
Since joining Al Nassr in 2022, he’s continued to inspire both fans and teammates with his unmatched work ethic and passion. But while he still keeps an eye on Manchester United, especially under current manager and former Portugal teammate Ruben Amorim, Ronaldo cautioned fans not to expect instant success.
“He’s doing his best,” Ronaldo said of Amorim. “But miracles? No. Manchester United have good players, but not all of them understand what that club truly means. They need to change, and it’s not just about the coach, everyone has to look in the mirror.”
As Ronaldo prepares to take his final bow, football fans around the world are bracing for the emotional moment when one of the sport’s greatest ambassadors hangs up his boots.
“It’s been an amazing journey,” he reflected. “But when the time comes, I’ll be ready.”
