Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday held a strategic security meeting with heads of security agencies in the state to review the security situation and strengthen preventive measures amid rising insecurity nationwide.
In a post shared on X, the governor explained that he met with the security chiefs “to assess the level of security in the state and the country as it relates to us,” stressing the importance of preparation even in times of calm.
He noted, “As we often say, the best time to prepare for war is during a time of peace.”
Abiodun highlighted that Ogun State continues to rank among the most peaceful in the country, a status he insisted must be continually safeguarded. “Ogun State is currently regarded as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, if not the most peaceful, and it is important that we continue to protect and sustain that standing,” he wrote.
The governor emphasized that sustaining such a reputation requires constant vigilance, proactive planning, and improved response capacity. “To maintain this position, we must stay proactive, strengthen our preparedness, and put in place the right measures to mitigate anything that could threaten our peace and stability.”
According to him, Monday’s meeting forms part of ongoing engagements with security heads aimed at preventing emerging threats. “This is not the first meeting of its kind, but it is a particularly important one, which is why we convened it today,” he added.
Abiodun reiterated that the discussions reaffirmed a joint commitment between the state government and security agencies to safeguard every resident. “These formed part of our remarks as we engaged with the service chiefs this morning, reaffirming our shared commitment to keeping Ogun State safe, peaceful, and secure for all.”
Monday’s meeting took place against the backdrop of worsening security challenges across Nigeria. On Friday, armed men abducted 215 students and 12 teachers from St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, though 50 of the victims had escaped by Sunday. Just days earlier, 26 schoolgirls were taken from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State.
In Kwara State, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed the release of 38 victims kidnapped during an attack on Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area.
