Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has explained that his decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken purely in the interest of the state and its development.

Governor Diri made this known on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa. It was his first public statement since formally resigning from the PDP on October 15.

Speaking at the event, which was attended by political leaders across party lines, Diri said he understood that not everyone would immediately grasp his reasons for joining the APC, but assured that time would reveal his genuine intentions.

“Somebody had to make that decision, and I took it on behalf of the state,” Diri stated. “I did it in the best interest of Bayelsa. Some may not understand now, but eventually, it will become clear.”

The governor highlighted peace, security, and steady progress as reasons to be thankful to God, noting that his administration had focused on completing inherited projects and initiating new ones since coming into office.

He also emphasized that politics should be used as a tool for unity and development, not for division or destruction.

“Politics should be about service and growth, not about pulling others down,” Diri said. “The peace and unity we enjoy today are proof that Bayelsa is moving forward. This gathering itself is a testimony of our togetherness.”

Governor Diri reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining peace and fostering collaboration among Bayelsans, urging citizens to cultivate a spirit of gratitude and unity for the state’s continued progress.
