Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally enrolled as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in the country’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The registration was completed on Monday, days after Atiku addressed ADC supporters and stakeholders in Adamawa, where he disclosed his intention to join the party.

The development had earlier been confirmed by Abdul Rasheeth, an aide to Atiku, in a statement made available to PUNCH Online.

Images and video clips from the scene captured Atiku’s convoy entering the town as enthusiastic supporters drummed, sang, and displayed placards with his photograph.

Atiku acknowledged the crowd from his vehicle and was later presented with his ADC membership card.

In a short post on his X (formerly Twitter) account shortly after completing the process, he wrote, “It’s official. -AA”

This step formalises Atiku’s alignment with the coalition party, which he had publicly backed in July as a unifying platform for opposition figures—among them Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal—to take on President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Until now, Atiku and other key opposition stakeholders had held back from formally registering with the ADC.

His entry into the party is anticipated to enhance its credibility and strengthen ongoing efforts to build a consolidated opposition front before the next general elections.
