Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has formally announced his ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kebbi State.

Speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa on Monday, monitored by PUNCH Malami said he is confident of his widespread grassroots support and is determined to address the state’s worsening insecurity and revive its declining agricultural economy.

Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet permitted political mobilisation, Malami said his supporters would demonstrate their strength when the time is right.

“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win. We won’t disappoint those who believe in us,” he declared.

Malami, who served under the APC-led administration, took a swipe at the ruling party, accusing it of worsening conditions in the North and exposing farmers to unchecked insecurity.
He lamented that persistent bandit attacks have driven many farmers off their lands, crippling agricultural output.

“Today, rice mills that operated for two decades have shut down because of bad policies that favour foreign companies,” he said, blaming both state and federal governments for what he described as negligence and policy failure.

The former AGF explained that his governorship ambition stems from a desire to “salvage Kebbi State” by restoring security, rebuilding the agricultural sector, and prioritising residents’ welfare. He insisted that his campaign is not motivated by personal gain but by a sense of responsibility.

Malami resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He said his defection came after “wide consultations and deep personal reflection” and was driven by love for the country and concern for the everyday suffering of Nigerians—not anger or selfish interests.
