The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, visited Kebbi State on Tuesday in response to the recent abduction of students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga.
During the visit, he is scheduled to meet with the State Governor, Nasir Idris, and later speak to officers of the Nigeria Police Force in the state, according to Channels Television.
Egbetokun’s trip comes shortly after a security meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Sunday, where the growing wave of kidnappings in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states was reviewed.
Also in attendance at the briefing were the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyode; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kelvin Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye; Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Tosin Ajayi.
Earlier, PUNCH Online reported that bandits invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in the early hours of November 17, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before abducting several students.
According to findings, the attackers operated without resistance and shot Makuku while he tried to shield the students.
While the country was still reeling from the incident in Kebbi, another mass abduction occurred in Niger State last Friday at St. Mary’s Primary and Secondary School, Papiri.
Reports indicated that the assailants arrived in large numbers—over 60 motorcycles and a van—shooting the school’s gatekeeper and leaving him in critical condition.
The attackers seized 315 students from the Catholic-run school, though 50 later escaped, according to the Christian Association of Nigeria.
Confirming the development, CAN Chairman in Niger State and Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, said the students who fled regained their freedom between Friday and Saturday.
