President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved another five-year term for Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), extending his leadership of the nation’s anti-drug fight until 2031.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Media, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday.
Marwa, who was first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, has been widely credited with revitalizing the NDLEA. His reappointment signals President Tinubu’s confidence in his ability to continue steering Nigeria’s anti-narcotics campaign.
Before joining the NDLEA, Marwa served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020, an experience that helped shape his tough approach to drug control.
The Adamawa-born retired officer boasts an impressive résumé in Military. A graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1973.
Over the course of his career, Marwa held several key positions, among it is the Brigade Major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to then Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, Registrar of the NDA, Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission at the United Nations
He also governed Lagos and Borno States during his time as a military administrator.
Marwa holds two postgraduate degrees, a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
Since assuming office as NDLEA boss, Marwa has overseen some of the most significant crackdowns on drug trafficking in Nigeria’s history.
President Tinubu praised Marwa’s commitment to the national drug war, describing his reappointment as a recognition of his outstanding efforts.
“Your reappointment is a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse,” Tinubu said. “I urge you not to relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs who are out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
With his mandate renewed, Marwa is expected to intensify the NDLEA’s crackdown on illicit drug networks and deepen rehabilitation and prevention programmes nationwide.
