LAUTECH-GATE

The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin Campus, has announced a two-week suspension of academic activities following the tragic death of a 200-level student who was killed in a road accident on the Iseyin–Saki Road in Oyo State.

The deceased, a student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, was reportedly run over by an unidentified commercial driver on Friday morning.

Eyewitnesses told The PUNCH that angry students protested the incident, setting the vehicle involved ablaze after the driver fled the scene.

Confirming the development, the university’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, expressed the institution’s deep sorrow over the loss and said the temporary suspension was to allow students and staff to mourn.

“The management of LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, deeply regrets to announce the tragic passing of a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Economics, who was fatally wounded by a hit-and-run driver in Iseyin,” Balogun said in a statement.

“In light of this grievous loss, and in recognition of the emotional toll it has taken on our students and staff, the university has approved a two-week suspension of academic activities at the Iseyin campus, effective immediately.”

He added that all students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources are to proceed on a two-week break and are expected to resume on Monday, November 24, 2025.
Essential service officers, he said, would be notified if required to remain on duty.

Balogun urged students to remain calm, stay safe, and support one another while honouring the memory of their late colleague.

This incident recalls a similar tragedy in January, when the Lagos State Government ordered the closure of Smiley Kids Montessori School, Sangotedo, after a swimming pool accident claimed the life of a two-year-old pupil, Rapheala Ogbodo.

Both cases highlight how educational institutions often suspend activities following student fatalities, pending investigations and administrative reviews.
