The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on political parties in Osun State to ensure their primary elections are conducted strictly in line with the law as preparations begin for the 2026 governorship poll.
The Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, made this appeal in a statement released on Monday in Osogbo by the commission’s Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa.
INEC has already scheduled the governorship election for August 8, 2026.
Agboke reminded political parties that the Electoral Act 2022, along with INEC’s guidelines, must guide all primary activities. He stressed that credible primaries are essential in reducing the rising cases of pre-election disputes often caused by irregular or undemocratic selection processes.
He explained that many election-related court cases stem from poorly conducted primaries, a situation he said can be avoided if parties simply follow the rules.
“Political parties must ensure free, fair, transparent and peaceful primaries that truly reflect the wishes of their members,” he emphasised.
According to him, all aspirants should be given equal and fair opportunities to participate without discrimination.
INEC has fixed November 24 to December 15, 2025, as the window for parties in Osun to conduct their governorship primaries.
Agboke assured parties that the commission is ready to provide all necessary support and guidance to help them meet the legal requirements. He also called on security agencies and other stakeholders to work with INEC to ensure peaceful and credible exercises.
He warned that the commission will not hesitate to take lawful action against any political party that disregards electoral rules and procedures.
