The leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Osun State, Adeboye Ademoroti, has been reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Ilesa area of the state.
Details surrounding the attack were still sketchy at the time of this report.
Security sources, who asked not to be named because they were not authorised to speak publicly, told PUNCH Metro that Ademoroti and another individual were ambushed and shot at the Olomilagbala area of Ilesa late Tuesday.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said a medical practitioner in Ilesa alerted police after two gunshot victims were brought to his hospital.
Ojelabi noted that the doctor informed officers that one of the victims, later identified as Ademoroti—popularly known as Germani—had died before arrival.
“We received the report late yesterday (Tuesday). The doctor of the hospital where they were rushed to reported the matter to the police. The doctor said two victims with gunshot injuries were brought to his hospital.
“The doctor also told us that one of them was brought in dead. Our operatives immediately moved to the scene. The one brought in dead to the hospital was later identified as Germani, the real name being Adeboye Ademoroti,” Ojelabi said.
Providing further updates, Ojelabi added that the deceased was the “NURTW chairman for Unit 4, Ilesa.” He said officers recovered cartridges from the scene as investigations continue.
“No arrest yet, but the tactical team has been deployed to the area to support the operatives on the ground. The real name of the deceased is Adeboye Ademoroti. The circumstances surrounding the incident are not clear yet.”
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has condemned the increasing wave of political violence in parts of the state and has instructed the Commissioner of Police to tackle all politically motivated killings across Ijesaland.
The directive was issued in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Wednesday.
Appealing to political actors to avoid bloodshed and respect democratic processes, Adeleke lamented the persistent violence in Ilesa and urged politicians to desist from thuggery.
The investigation into the NURTW leader’s killing comes shortly after police intensified inquiries into the deaths of a Federal Road Safety Corps officer, Funmilayo Oluwamayokun Lasisi, and her daughter, Sewa. Both were declared missing in Ogun State before being found dead with mutilated remains in the hideout of a suspected herbalist in Osun.
PUNCH Metro earlier reported that 39-year-old Lasisi and her teenage daughter left their home in the Obasanjo Hilltop Estate, Abeokuta, on November 2 and were never seen alive again. Lasisi, a Superintendent Route Commander, held a senior operational role within the FRSC and oversaw several enforcement routes.
