The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum has called on party leaders and members to unite and prepare for the crucial task of rebuilding Nigeria.

Damagum made the appeal on Wednesday during a meeting at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, emphasizing that the PDP must remain steadfast and proactive despite being in opposition.

His remarks come amid recent legal battles surrounding the party’s planned national convention in Ibadan. Last week, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja halted the convention, ruling that the PDP had failed to follow its own constitutional procedures. According to the judge, the notification for the convention was not properly endorsed by the authorized party officials.

The ruling was welcomed by some PDP leaders, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. However, the party got a reprieve on Tuesday when Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court set aside the earlier order, granting permission for the convention to proceed and directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to monitor the exercise.

Addressing the Board of Trustees meeting, Damagum reflected on the state of the party when he took over as acting chairman and urged members to close ranks for the sake of unity and progress.

“We don’t have to be in power to begin our mission to rescue, redirect, and rebuild this country,” he said. “That mission starts now, even in opposition. We must stay true to the ideals and values that define the PDP.”

He also commended Justice Akintola for his courage and sense of justice, noting that his decision has restored hope and cleared the way for the PDP to hold its much-anticipated national convention.
