The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 13 male suspects in connection with an ambush attack on police officers in Akpakume community, Udi Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the incident occurred on Monday, when police operatives moved to arrest individuals allegedly involved in conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and cult-related activities.
“Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command, in the early hours of November 3, 2025, arrested thirteen (13) male suspects and recovered one (1) locally made single-barrelled gun at Akpakume community, Udi Local Government Area,” Ndukwe said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to him, the suspects and their accomplices had laid an ambush for the officers and opened fire, injuring some policemen and damaging their operational vehicle.
“The operatives, however, swiftly responded with superior firepower, forcing many of the attackers to flee with gunshot wounds. One locally made single-barrelled gun was recovered during the arrest,” he stated.
Ndukwe added that the gunfire from the hoodlums shattered the lights of the police vehicle and damaged other nearby vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, on Tuesday, led a team of senior officers to Akpakume for an on-the-spot assessment of the scene.
During the visit, the team observed that the assailants had vandalised homes, shops, crops, and livestock belonging to residents of the community.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the criminal acts stem from an ongoing intra-communal conflict in the area,” Ndukwe explained.
The Commissioner has since ordered a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
He assured that the Command would ensure all perpetrators of the attack and related crimes are brought to justice.
