Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ending months of speculation about his next political direction. The announcement came on Monday after he collected his ADC membership card at his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State.
Speaking shortly after his registration, Atiku said his move signals the beginning of what he called “real opposition” ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Now I have picked up my membership card of the ADC. Now, the real opposition has begun. We will chase the APC out of government,” he declared.
Atiku urged his supporters nationwide to immediately register with the ADC, describing the party as the new platform for a united opposition movement.
The Chairman of ADC in Adamawa, Shehu Yohanna, who supervised his registration said Atiku’s entry officially kick-starts a state-wide membership drive across all local governments and wards. He appealed particularly to youths and women to join the party and participate actively in shaping Nigeria’s future.
Senator Sadiq Yar’Adua, the National Secretary of the ADC Registration and Mobilisation Committee, also encouraged Nigerians to register and “take ownership of the nation’s political future.”
Atiku’s unveiling attracted several prominent political figures from Adamawa, including former Governor Bindow Jibrilla, Senator Aishatu Binani, Senator Ahmed Barata, Senator Aziz Nyako, and Senator Ishaku Abbo, an indication of growing realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former PDP presidential candidate resigned from the party in July, describing his departure as “heartbreaking.” He accused the PDP of drifting away from its founding principles and failing to resolve deep-seated internal divisions.
Previous reports from PUNCH Online indicated that Atiku and other key opposition leaders had agreed to adopt the ADC as a united front against the ruling APC in 2027. Key figures in the coalition include former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former APC national chairman John Oyegun among others.
