The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has condemned the party’s national convention held on Saturday in Ibadan, describing it as illegal and insisting that its decisions will not stand.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Kenneth Yowika, the Rivers PDP commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for boycotting the event, saying the commission’s action upheld the rule of law and strengthened democratic processes.

According to the statement, two Federal High Courts had previously barred the PDP from conducting the convention, while a High Court in Ibadan issued a contrary ruling permitting it to go ahead.

Despite the conflicting court orders, the convention proceeded, resulting in the election of new national officers and the dissolution of some state executive committees.

Yowika dismissed the convention as a “sham,” criticising the party’s leadership for disregarding existing court directives.

He praised INEC for complying with the Federal High Court judgments, describing the commission’s stance as a model of respect for democratic norms.

The Rivers PDP expressed confidence that a competent court would eventually nullify the convention’s outcomes. It urged party members to remain calm and rely on the judicial process.

“The ill-advised convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny, as the matter is already before the Court of Appeal. We place our trust in the judiciary and encourage our members to do the same,” the statement concluded.
