Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has promised far-reaching reforms aimed at strengthening internal democracy and eliminating impunity within the party.
Speaking on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State, Turaki said he recognises the enormity of the responsibility placed on him but remains confident in the PDP’s leadership and its ability to reposition the party.
“You have entrusted us with a significant responsibility, and we will carry it with dedication as we take our message to Nigerians,” he declared.
“We know the task ahead is demanding. Our party is at a critical juncture, but we are prepared and fully committed.”
Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, revealed that the new National Working Committee will soon unveil its operational blueprint to guide its activities.
“Very soon, we will lay out our guiding principles and the procedures that will drive our work. Once we do, we intend to begin implementation immediately,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to the party’s core values, Turaki stressed that the PDP has endured because it remains rooted in the aspirations of Nigerians.
“As I speak to you today, the Peoples Democratic Party is the only major political party that has retained its original name. That is because it belongs to the Nigerian people,” he said. “We are returning this party to its owners—the people. Impunity will no longer be tolerated.”
Turaki emerged chairman at the party’s national convention, where delegates from 17 states cast their votes. He secured 1,516 votes in the election held at the Lekan Salami Stadium.
Announcing the results, former Senator Ben Obi stated that Senator Yakubu Danmarke came second with 275 votes. He also confirmed that a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Taofeek Arapaja, was elected National Secretary.
