Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday left Abuja for Kebbi State on the instructions of President Bola Tinubu to engage state officials and families of the students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga.

A statement issued by his spokesman and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, noted that Shettima is scheduled to meet with Governor Nasiru Idris, traditional leaders, security commanders, and parents of the kidnapped schoolgirls.

Nkwocha said, “President Tinubu had specifically directed the Vice President to assure the people of Kebbi State that the Federal Government will ensure the quick and safe release of the abducted girls.

During the visit, VP Shettima will also convey the President’s condolences over the recent security challenges and reaffirm the administration’s commitment to securing all educational institutions across the country.”

According to the statement, the Vice President is accompanied by APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda; Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar.

Shettima’s visit comes after a pre-dawn attack on Monday during which armed men invaded the school, abducted at least 25 students, and killed the vice principal. One student reportedly escaped unharmed, while the search for the others continues with support from hunters and security forces.

The incident has heightened worries about ongoing bandit activities across the northwest.

Earlier, President Tinubu reacted to the tragedy, describing himself as “heartbroken” by both the abduction in Kebbi and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba along with several soldiers in a separate assault in Borno State.
