Nigeria’s Super Eagles put on a dominant display on Thursday, defeating the Panthers of Gabon 4–1 in extra time to progress to the final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs. The thrilling encounter took place at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco.

After a cagey, goalless first half, Akor Adams broke the deadlock shortly after the restart, capitalising on a defensive blunder to hand Nigeria the lead. However, Gabon clawed their way back into the contest, snatching an equaliser just four minutes before full time to send the game into extra time.

The Super Eagles responded in style during the added period. Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s advantage with a composed finish, before star striker Victor Osimhen took centre stage, netting twice to seal a convincing 4–1 victory and extinguish Gabon’s hopes.

Defensively, Nigeria held firm, with Benjamin Frederick and Calvin Bassey putting in commanding performances to shut down any late threats from the Panthers.

The result pushes the Super Eagles one step closer to booking their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, with the decisive playoff round now set to determine their qualification fate.
