Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has cautioned his players against complacency as Nigeria prepares to face Uganda in their final Group C match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday, Chelle said the encounter would be determined by smart player management rather than relying on a fixed starting XI. According to him, success at the tournament depends on the entire squad, not just the first eleven.

“This is not a competition for the starting eleven alone. It’s a competition for the whole team. Sometimes, the player who comes on for just five minutes ends up scoring the decisive goal,” Chelle said.
The coach explained that his tactical approach evolves with each game, stressing that the final group match must balance the desire to win with the need to stay fresh for the knockout stages.

“The first game is about intensity, the second is about tactics, and the third is about player management. We want to win, but we must also prepare ourselves for the next round,” he added.

Chelle also spoke about the pressure of leading the Super Eagles, describing the role as demanding but motivating due to Nigeria’s high expectations.

“When I accepted this job, I entered a different level. The pressure is constant, and it pushes me to give my best every day for the success of the team,” he said.
The coach took time to praise star striker Victor Osimhen, who marked his birthday on Monday, describing him as one of the best players in the world and expressing hope that the tournament would be special for him.

“He’s focused, in a good mood, and I wish him many goals. I hope this AFCON becomes a memorable one for him,” Chelle said.

Team captain Wilfred Ndidi also insisted that the squad remains fully focused despite already securing qualification for the Round of 16.

“The atmosphere in the camp is very good and everyone is excited, but the match against Tunisia is behind us. Our attention is fully on the next game,” Ndidi said.

Reflecting on his first-ever goal for Nigeria, Ndidi described the moment as deeply emotional. He revealed that his celebration was inspired by his late father and Nigerian football legend Kanu Nwankwo.

“That goal meant a lot to me. I wore Kanu’s old number four jersey, and I remembered how my dad used to talk about him. The celebration just came to me in that moment,” he explained.
Nigeria, who top Group C with two wins from two matches, will face Uganda at the Complex Sportif de Fès on Tuesday.

The Super Eagles will be looking to maintain their momentum and discipline as they head into the knockout phase.
