Liverpool have confirmed that Swedish striker Alexander Isak has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a serious ankle injury that will keep him out of action for several months.

The club disclosed on Tuesday, via a BBC Sport report, that the 26-year-old fractured his fibula and required an operation on his left ankle. While Liverpool did not give a specific return date, they expect the forward to be sidelined for a lengthy period.

Isak picked up the injury during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham. The striker had only just come off the bench when he found the back of the net for Arne Slot’s side, but his joy was short-lived. He was injured in the same moment he struck the shot, following a challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.

Clearly in discomfort, Isak was unable to continue the match and had to be assisted off the pitch by Liverpool’s medical staff.

The setback is a major blow for both the player and the club, especially given Isak’s high-profile arrival at Anfield earlier in the season. The striker joined Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer for a Premier League record fee of £125 million.

Since his move in September, Isak has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, but his season has now been disrupted by another injury.

The latest issue adds to a challenging period for the forward. During the summer, he was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to what was described as a minor thigh problem, amid growing uncertainty over his future. Before completing his deadline-day switch to Liverpool, Isak also spent time training alone at his former club, Real Sociedad.

Liverpool will now have to cope without their star signing as he begins his recovery, while Isak focuses on returning to full fitness in the months ahead.
